How did Warrington
Kickboxing Studio achieve NINE
Champions in 2011?
Primarily it is due to the
excellent level of tuitiion offered by our team
of black belt instructors, but equally as important
is the fact that our members had been kept very
active during the 2011 season
with the five 'KUMITE
TOURNAMENTS'
that Okami
Dojo - Wolf Gym organised.
During the 2012 season, we are aiming to continue
with our successfull format.
Maybe you could begin your journey on these events,
and one day follow in the footsteps of our senior
members - and become a champion yourself!
Anyone wishing to compete
on the February
4th event,
must register with their instructor as soon as
possible and begin their running program.

Joe Miller passes the Black Belt test!
On Saturday 25th
February 2012, Joe
Miller, aged 25, became the
46th person to pass the Okami dojo’s black
belt Kickboxing exam. During
the ten part, four hour examination Joe
had to complete several
modules which included basic teaching skills
and first aid, refereeing, judging, cornerman
work and demonstrating various weight training
methods.
Miller
was also put through a gruelling fitness
test that began with five rounds of interval
- sprint running, ( over three kilometres
).
|
|
|
This was then followed
by mixed padwork, that also including advanced,
( jumping and spinning ), kicks, as well as demonstrating
K.O. single strike - power strikes, ( via board
breaking ), with kicks, punches, knees, elbows
and open palm techniques.
To complete the Black Belt
exam, Joe
then had to free-spar under Thai-Kickboxing, (
Muaythai ), rules for fifteen minutes over five
rounds of three minutes, allowing full-contact
kicks, punches, knees and elbow techniques. His
opponent for this was former Professional British
Champion Rhys Edwards
( 4th Dan ).
Currently one of our leading
senior members, Joe
has been training at the Warrington
Kickboxing Studio for just over
four years. His record in the ring currently stands
at 15 contests, with 13 wins and just 2 losses.
At the 2011 Amateur Championships,
last November, Miller captured the I.K.F.
British Heavyweight Title ( K-1
/ M.T.R. format ).

The next event - Registration now open!
Registration has just
opened for our second Amateur Kickboxing event
of the 2012 season.
These events are open to beginners, and are
an ideal way for them to gain competition
experience for the first time, but in a safe
environment.
All bouts are conducted under strict Amateur
safety regulations.
This consists of very similar criteria as
used for Olympic Combat-sports, such as Headguards,
Bodyshields, Larger gloves, Elbow Pads and
Shinpads , as well as Electronic 'Open Scoring'.
Standard Japanese Kickboxing ( K-1
) rules apply ( Kicks, Boxing,
Knees - with limited clinch hold ).
|
|
|
Senior members are also matched up against people
of a similar level, and a 'Kumite-Tournament'
is used as a testing ground to see how the seniors
are progressing in their training.
A Kumite-Tournament
is where entries have the opportunity to compete
upto three times in a day. Anyone winning a Grandprix
( 3 Bouts ) will receive an additional award, the
'Fighting-Spirit'
award.
Kumite-Tournament's
are ideal preparation for the year end-
I.K.F National Amateur
Championships, as this too is a
tournament event, whereby to win a Championship
title belt one may have to win upto three bouts
in a day!
Our trainers use the Amateur Kickboxing competitions
to evaluate a students progression, and highlight
any areas that need improving, then they can develop
their training accordingly.

K-1 Kickboxing - 3rd Int. win for Paige!
| Saturday
31st March 2012, saw the biggest
Kickboxing event yet to be staged in the
U.K. held at Event City in Manchester.
Organised by America based promoter, Dan
Green, this show featured
Britains best competing in Thai-Kickboxing
( Muaythai
) and Japanese
Kickboxing ( K-1
) matches against European opposition.
Warrington Kickboxer, Paige
'The Diamond' Farrington
faced Ines
Rolo of Portugal,
in an International Kickboxing bout under
K-1
rules, which allows Kicks, Boxing and Knee
strikes.
|
|
|
|
Farrington
was explosive from the opening round, hurting
Ines
with a shin-kick to the ribs. Showing slick
Boxing skills, Paige
landed cleanly with several left hooks to
the body during the early exchanges, and
it was only Rolo's
fighting spirit that saw her last until
the bell.
Rounds two, three and four, saw the 'Queen
of the Ring',
Farrington totally school
her opponent, landing Kicks to the head
several times and keeping Rolo
constantly on the back foot.
|
|
|
In
round five, Ines showed great heart and tried
to rally, but was beaten to the punch in every
exchange. Several times Rolo
looked to close the range with her knee-Kicks,
but Farrington
always had the advantage in the clinch-hold.
The master-class from Paige
saw the Judges award a unanimous decision, and
the Black Belt from Warrington
Kickboxing Studio had her hands
raised.
This was the third time that Farrington
has represented her country succesfully at International
level. Promoter, Dan
Green, was so impressed with Paige,
that he has already stated that they would like
to have her on their next super-show scheduled
for November. In the meantime, there are apparently
female Kickboxers looking for bouts in Canada
and Japan
at Atomweight, so we will have to see how things
work out between now and then!

Griffiths passes the Black Belt test!
On Saturday
28th April 2012, Nick
Griffiths , aged 27, became
the 47th adult member to pass the Okami
dojo’s black belt Kickboxing
exam.
During the ten part,
examination Nick
had to complete several modules that are
the requirement for someone to become an
Assistant
level Instructor, which
included basic teaching skills and first
aid, refereeing, judging, cornerman work
and demonstrating various weight training
methods.
|
|
|
Griffiths
flew through fitness test required for all members
taking the black belt test. This being five rounds
of interval - sprint running, ( over three kilometres
), followed by mixed padwork, that also includes
advanced, ( jumping and spinning ), kicks.
Nick
then had to free-spar under Thai-Kickboxing,
( Muaythai
), rules for fifteen minutes over five rounds
of three minutes, allowing full-contact Kicks,
Punches, Knees and Elbow techniques! Putting him
through his paces for this was former Professional
British Champion Rhys
Edwards, a Level 4 ( 4th Dan )
Instructor with over 15 years experience.
To complete the Black Belt
test, single shot - K.O. power striking was demonstrated
as the final exam module, via Tamishiwari - board
breaking. This is a test that dates back many
hundreds of years with traditional martial arts.
Should a person be able to break a single board
with a one explosive strike, the application is
that if this had been a vulnerable part of the
body, bones would be broken and a confrontation
quickly ended. The impact equivalent being that
a single board is as hard as a person’s nose,
a persons rib or vertebrae along the neck. Two
boards are approximately as hard as a persons
forearm, and three boards are approximately as
hard as the bones in a person's leg or as hard
as someone's skull.
Nick
was required to break using Kicks, Knees, Elbows,
and Open-palm techniques, smashing two and even
three boards at a time!
It takes on average of
about four years continual training for most people
to attain the black belt. Dedicated members, such
as Nick
however can enrol on Warrington
Kickboxing Studio's advanced training
program, whereby a member trains intensely, six
times a week, over a course of six cycles of eight
weeks throughout the year. During each two month
cycle, a member then tests for a belt rank to
improve their martial arts knowledge and technical
skills, and also competes at an amateur event
to gain valuable ringcraft experience.
Not only has Nick
successfully passed his black belt in exactly
two years through the advanced training program,
but during this time he has accumulated a record
of 15
contests
with 11 wins,
which also saw him become the I.K.F.
British Super-Welterweight Champion
( K-1 / Modified
Type Rules ) winning the title
at the 2011 Amateur
Kickboxing Championships last
November when he defeated Peter
Coke of Leigh.
Hopefully Griffiths
will be defending this title in November.
