The term KICKBOXING is now used as a GENERIC term ( loose term ) as there are various forms of Kickboxing practised worldwide and it is common practise to drop the national identity tag to a system : hence Japanese-Kickboxing is commonly known as KICKBOXING as is Thai-Kickboxing and Chinese Kickboxing.

FURTHER NOTES ON KICKBOXING TERMS :
CAGE-KICKBOXING -

'M.M.A.-KICKBOXING
' is sometimes refered to as 'CAGE-KICKBOXING', and even 'ULTIMATE-KICKBOXING' as many people associate M.M.A. Mixed-Martial-Arts with the sports most successful promotion, the U.F.C. ( Ultimate Fighting Championship ) which instead of using a ring, uses an eight sided 'CAGE' known as an Octogan.
Hence ' CAGE-KICKBOXING'

However M.M.A. is a global sport, and in many countries like Japan and Russia Mixed-Martial-Art matches are actually conducted in a Roped-Ring, as seen in the sports of Boxing and Kickboxing.

The only modification being that a 5th rope is added, approximately 6 inches above the floor height, to stop competitors falling out of the ring should they be grappling.

( As seen pict left ).

Therefore using the term 'CAGE-KICKBOXING' is not entirely accurate, however many people use this term when speaking of KICKBOXING that has been specifically modified for Mixed-Martial-Arts contests.

FURTHER NOTES ON KICKBOXING TERMS :
THAI-BOXING -

Muaythai Kickboxing is a long title to use to describe as style of Kickboxing, and it is common practise to shorten this with speach. This is sometimes shortened to Thai-Kickboxing, Kickboxing or Muaythai.

Occasionally people use the term to describe the sport as 'THAI-BOXING', and call practisioners THAI-BOXERS instead of KICKBOXERS. The use of the terms 'THAI-BOXING' and 'THAI-BOXERS' is incorrect and should be avoided as for many people it simply leads to confusion.

BOXING is a sport wherby combatants 'only' use Boxing ( Punches ).

KICKBOXING
is the sport where you expect to see Combatants 'KICK' as well as 'BOX'.

Also, as BOXING is an International sport, it is practised by people from of different nationalities.

If one was watching an Olympic BOXING tournament, you may see competing 'American' Boxers, 'French' Boxers, 'Thai' Boxers, 'British' Boxers, 'Japanese Boxers' etc..

In a BOXING contests you would 'NOT' see someone 'KICK', and that is why the term THAI-BOXER for someone who practises MUAYTHAI is incorrect.

A THAI-BOXER is someone who is from Thailand that practises the international sport of 'BOXING'.

YET..........

If you were watching two 'Thai' Kickboxers compete against each other, of course you would expect to not only see Boxing but Kicks as well, as these are Kickboxers practising the MUAYTHAI style of KICKBOXING.
