February 16th:
New Ladies World Champion!!
A
former student of Warrington Kickboxing Studio,
Michelle Preston
has just won the I.K.F. Professional Ladies World
Featherweight Title in a contest against
Hilary Mack
of Scotland.
During her years training
at W.K.S. Michelle
competed several times in the Amateur division,
actually winning two Silver medals at the British
Tournament Championships
( WAKO ).
Michelle
also passed her Okamido Kickboxing Blackbelt at
W.K.S. and was a regular sparring partner to our
rising star, I.K.F. Amateur British and Commonwealth
Champion Paige Farrington.
Michelle
then had further successes in the Professional
division, recording a win over Sally
Brandon of Leeds ( Bad Co. gym
). Michelle then represented her country with
two International contests. These were against
unbeaten Irish opponent Jenny
Cambell - who'm Michelle
gained a draw with, followed by a win over Sarah
Kesgomol of the U.S.A.

Three years ago, Michelle
moved to New Zealand, continuing her passion for
competition under respected K-1 fighter Jason
Suttie.

Together they have proved a winning team, building
on Michelle's
early successes and taking her to the next level
- that today elevated Michelle's
status to ‘World
Champion’, with her winning
the I.K.F. Pro. Featherweight Title.

Michelle
always gives credit to her time at Warrington
Kickboxing Studio whenever she
is interviewed, and it is great to see her finally
achieve her ambitions.
Michelle
was always seriously dedicated and it was only
a matter of time before she realised her dreams
and captured a World Title.
Well done to both Michelle
and her coach Jason
Suttie.

Lightburn Passes the Blackbelt!
( Picture - group 1
of 8 from the days
belt testing )

Congratulations
to everyone that succesfully graded on Saturday
( 9th ). The first exam is of the year is always
a special one, as many of the students that started
training in January face their first tests.
Also too, an extra special congratulations to
Warrington's rising star, Robert Lightburn
upon passing his Okamido
Kickboxing Blackbelt exam.
Rob, has become the 35th
student from Warrington Kickboxing Studio to pass
the coveted Okamido ( Wolf-style Kickboxing )
black belt examination.
Lightburn is, however, the very first
student to gain the belt in just 18 months, having
followed an advanced training programme since
his enrolment at the school.
( Pict - Above Rob
with his new Black Belt and Certificate )
( Pict - Below - Lightburn on his way to a win
against Steve Ellis, Birmingham K-Star Gym )

The dedicated 31-year-old from Penketh had to
complete a series of tests to get his black belt,
including shin-kicking three one-inch boards and
a highly impressive sparring performance against
former World Lightweight Champion Chris
Heath.
Lightburn's competitive record
is also impressive, having won seven of his eight
bouts and is currently ranked fourth
in the British rankings at Super-middleweight.

Rob has really stepped up his
training this year, and is looking to move down
two weight divisions.
He is expected to return to action in Darlington
on February 23rd
at Middleweight and then in Leigh on
March 29th
at Light-Middleweight, where we are hoping that
he will get a chance to contest the
I.K.F.British Light-Middleweight
Title.

February 23rd:
1st event of the 2008 season!
----ENGLAND
-v- TURKEY
Hosted
by the Paul Pearson,
and his Darlington team on Saturday
23rd February 2008 at
the Cockerton Centre, Darlington.
Warrington's British and Commonwealth Champion
Paige Farrington
represented her town and country in International
action against Turkish and former European Champion,
Aysegul Phevlin,
one of the Worlds best female amateur kickboxers,
with a record of 82
contests and 71
wins.
Unfortunately Paige
did not get the decision, in her European
Light-weight Title challenge.
She put in a very strong performance throughout,
in what was a very close and entertaining bout,
that many in attendance thought she won.
Paige narrowly
missed out by points decision. There was literally
only a few kicks that seperated the two, and Paige
who has been on a tremendous run recently was
very unlucky.
It needs to be added that her opponent, Aysegul
Phevlin, had a weight advantage
on the day. She came in over the feather-weight
limit ( 57.2 kgs ) which was a problem for the
promoters as this bout was originally scheduled
to contest the European Featherweight Title.
To enable the international bout to go ahead,
the athletes instead contested the European
Lightweight title ( 60.0 kgs ),
which meant Farrington
conceded her opponent an advantage. The bout was
a very close contest, and the team at Warrington
Kickboxing Studio would welcome a rematch in the
near future, should Phevlin
return to Featherweight.
Winning results on the event for Warrington
Kickboxers.
Chris Allen
beat Don Walker
from Newcastle.
Daryl Ellis
beat Mick Shoulder
from Bishop Auckland.

Joe Holman

Belt
Testing - Juniors and Adults
Congratulations to all of those that passed their
belt tests at the weekend.
It was a long day for all of those involved, as
this was our biggest gradings in several years.
( Pict : Group # 1 - some of the White
Belts )
Furter
congratulations to Gareth
Parker who succesfully passed
two grades on the same day - both with a score
of 100% - advancing to Green
Belt.
An extra congratultions must also go to our Okamido
( Wolf Gym
) ' Cubs Class ', that had ten
members pass their Yellow
Belt tests.

Warrington Kickboxing Studio's
Little Wolf -
Dominique Matthews,
in action demonstrating
the Round Kick as part of her Yellow Belt test.
On this exam there were no Blackbelt tests allowed
to be taken, but progessing into the Senior (
Brown Belt ) ranks were, John
Emanu, and Ste
Martin.
One of the highlights of their Brown Belt exam,
was the destruction tests, which required them
to break boards using several different techniques.
All of the breaks were against sets of boards
doubled up ( twice the thickness required for
the intermediate grades ).
Breaking ( known as Tameshawari ) is a very important
Japanese training method used within the martial
arts as a measurement for strength within an individuals
technique.
Boards can be much stronger than certain parts
of the body ( for example the nose, ribs or forearms
). Should a martial artist be able to succesfully
break boards with a particular strike, then the
application is transferable should one have to
use a technique in a self-defence situation against
a particular part of the body ( for example an
Elbow to the nose, a Knee-Kick to the ribs or
a Shin-Kick to the forearms ).
Having confidence in the power of your martial
art skills, can give you improved self-confidence
as an individual.
Both John
and Steve
have very strong Kickboxing skills, and they totally
smashed the boards in spectacular fashion!
Also their sparring ( Kumite ) test consisted
of 5 rounds under 'Full Rules' - which was the
first time that both had been tested in the ring
using their Elbow strikes as well as Kicks, Boxing
and Knee techniques. Both used the 'Upper-Cut'
and 'Circular' elbows to great effect, ( as well
as a perfectly delivered 'Jump-Downward Elbow
Strike' by Steve
Martin ).
Safety
is alway paramount at Warrington
Kickboxing Studio, and during
the sparring test, as John
and Steve
were using 'Elbow' strikes, they wore the very
latest safety equipment that has just arrived
from Japan,
the Kudo
Headguard!
Jokingly know as a 'Power Ranger' helmet, the
Kudo
headguard is an excellent piece of equipment that
features full face protection, allowing people
to practise their martial arts to the highest
level without worry of injury. Should you be interested
in purchasing a Kudo
headguard, speak to an Instructor as currently
their is a limited stock.
Steve Martin
is currently Ranked #5
at Light-Heavyweight in the
British Ranking and John
Emanu is currently Ranked #4
at Super-Heavyweight in the
British Rankings and are
progressing very well. Both are next in action
at the Amateur Kickboxing Championships on the
7 June.

June 7th:
3rd event of the 2008 season!
The Urmston leisure centre was the venue for the
third event of the 2008 season on the A.K.A. Amateur
Kickboxing Association’s national circuit.
On this event two Warrington kickboxer’s
were involved in headline bouts.
Unfortunately Paul
Quayle lost on points to Dan
Taylor for the Commonwealth
Light-Cruiserweight Title and
Steve Martin
lost on points to the vastly more experienced
Nathan Royle
for the British Light-Heavyweight title.
On the support card Warrington did have several
good wins.
(Pict : Below Matt
Guy vs Dave Morrisimoe)

Warrington's Dave
Buck defeated Paul
Sandall of York.
Warrington's Joe
Holman defeated Mark
Prince of Leigh.
Warrington's Matt
Guy defeated Dave

Warrington's Neil

Whittle of Leigh.
Warrington's Ian
Finnegan defeated Jamie
Poole of Leigh.
Warrington's Julie

McCaffrey of Leigh.
Warrington's Carlie
O'Donnell defeated Hazel

This brings Warringtons accrued wins for the 2008
Season so far to '
20 ' over three events, which
is more than any other school on the A.K.A. national
circuit!

Matt Bowen Passes the Blackbelt!
( Picture - group 4
of 7 from the days
belt testing )

Congratulations
to everyone that succesfully graded on Saturday
( 28th ).
Also too, an extra special congratulations to
Warrington's Matt Bowen upon
passing his Okamido
Kickboxing Blackbelt exam.
Matt, has become the 36th
student from Warrington
Kickboxing Studio to pass
the coveted Okamido ( Wolf-style Kickboxing )
black belt examination.
Matt Bowen, from Thelwall in Warrington
has been training at Warrington
Kickboxing Studio for two and
a half years and has competed several times, gaining
a respectable ranking position of number '8'
in the Light-Cruiserweight division of the British
Amateur Kickboxing rankings.
The 21 year old, former Lymm High School student,
passed his Blackbelt exam with flying colours
and hopes that his martial arts skills and amateur
competition experience will hold him in good stead,
as he is about to travel to Thailand for five
weeks intensive training, after which he is hoping
have his first professional
Thai-Kickboxing ( Muaythai ) bout!

July 5th:
4th event of the 2008 season!
Was
hosted by Lee Hasdell,
and his team on Saturday
5th July 2008 in
Milton Keynes.
On the event Warrington had two very good results.
Blackbelt, Robert
Lightburn, had a terrific middleweight
bout against Ashley
Partridge of Birmingham. The Warrington
Kickboxer needed the first round to adjust to
his opponents awkward style, as Partridge
is a Southpaw, but once Rob
found is range he soon dominated the bout with
sharp boxing combinations, followed up each time
with either a
knee-kick to the body or a spectacular high kick.
Forcing his opponent onto the backfoot throughout
rounds two and three, Lightburn
recorded a thrilling points victory.
(Pict : Rob Lightburn and Ste Martin )
Rising
star, Steve Martin
was awesome tonight, in his light-heavyweight
bout with the hometown favourite
Lee Wooding of Milton
Keynes. Following a brief exchanges of kicks in
the openning seconds of round one,
Martin pinned his opponent
in the corner, swiftly finishing him of with a
tremendous boxing combination, that saw Wooding
drop to the canvas and unable to beat the count.
A first round stoppage for Steve
Martin!

The

especially Neil, as it was in
fact also his birthday! )
Fastest to complete the 20K was ( of course!!!

Sep
27th:
5th event of the season - The Warrington
Show!
Warrington Kickboxing
Studio hosted the 5th event of
the 2008 season at the prestigious PARR HALL,
in Warrington on Saturday 27th September.
Warrington Kickboxing
Studio was in a predicament due
to being the host gym for this event as three
title bouts lost their original opponents in the
days prior to the show.
Each year, since 2005, Warrington
Kickboxing Studio host the event,
in conjunction with its annual sponsored run,
and the profits from these go to Warrington Childrens
Ward at the local hospital.
To enable the charity event to go ahead, W.K.S.
put forward three athletes as replacements, that
all gave away a weight
advantage to the champions.
Ste Martin ( who usually competes
at Light-Heavyweight ) lost to
Wigan’s Gavin
Rogerson,in a Light-Cruiserweight
title bout.
Darly Ellis
( who usually competes at Super-Lightweight
) lost to Cornwalls Matt
Murt in a Light-Welterweight English
Title bout.
Paul Quayle
( who usually competes at Light-Cruiserweight
) lost to Altrincham’s Carlos
Dait in a Cruiserweight title
bout.
Also headlining on the event, (although matched
up at short notice), Warrington's Matt
Guy lost to Leigh’s Danny
Weir in an English
Middleweight Title bout.
Full credit to all four, as they tried their best
and gave the crowd an excellent nights entertainment.
It is not the winning that matters but the taking
part is a common and true saying. Also it is what
the experience gained from the bouts that is important,
as all should look to learn from their matches,
and build on this for the future.
It was not all unfortunate news though, as there
were in fact 7
wins for Warrington!
Super-Welterweight Andy
Gough’s defeated Tee-Sides
Matty Cooper,
Light cruiserweight Dave
Corless-Smith defeated Leigh’s
Mick Price,
Cruiserweight Ste
Rimmer defeated Leigh’s
Greg Tabner,
Welterweight Angela
Atkinson defeated Altrincham’s
Agneiszka Drozdrik,
Light-middleweight Danny
Garth defeated Teeside’s
Francis Monslave,
Light cruiserweight Joe
Holman bashed Teeside’s
Andrew Cairnes,
and
Heavyweight John
Emanu defeated Prestwich’s
Arthur Mowak.
This brings Warrington
Kickboxing Studio's tally of wins
so far during the 2008
season to an exceptionally high
'29
wins', which is more
than any other school on the national circuit!

Future Events
:
Championships - Just ' 1 ' Week away!
The
final event of the 2008 season on the Amateur
Kickboxing circuit will be held in Manchester,
at the Urmston Leisure Centre, on Saturday
22nd November 2008.
Anyone hoping to compete on this event, must bring
this to the attention of an instructor at the
soonest opportunity to arrange their sprint-running
programme which will supplement their Kickboxing
lessons.
The Okamido
competition training programme must be started
4 weeks prior to the event.
This must be followed six
times a week, with sessions alternating between
one day Kickboxing,
and the next day Sprint-Running.
Should anyone wish to have additional '1-to-1'
EXCLUSIVE
sparring sessions with a Blackbelt personal trainer,
they will need to book them immediately, as these
sessions will soon get fully booked.
Also popular in the lead up to competitions are
'2-to-1'
Dual
EXCLUSIVE
Lessons. The sooner you start these sparring -specific
sessions, the greater you will benefit from them.
During both of these type
of sessions, we recommend 'SCORED-SPARRING'
as opposed to FREE-SPARRING.
This is where techniques are scored every round,
and a winner declared at the end of the session.
This sports-specific training greatly improves
a students competition skills, and can be very
enjoyable as it adds a further dimension to your
training.
