FEB 7th:
-Champion Graham
Sayer in 'M.M.A.' Action!
On
Sunday 7th February 2010 Warrington
Kickboxer, Graham
Sayer, competed at the Combat
Sports Open Trials. This was the first of four
M.M.A.
events which are scheduled to be held during 2010
by the British Association
of Mixed Martial Arts, with the
B.A.M.M.A.
Championship finals to be contested in November
for those competitors with the highest rankings.
Mixed martial arts, more commonly known as ‘M.M.A.’,
mixes the martial art methods of the four
Olympic combat sports into one 'singular system'.
Here you see the explosive kicking
techniques from Taekwondo, combined with the knockout
punching skills of Boxing.

This is then further ‘mixed’ with
the grappling and groundwork drills from Wrestling
as well as the throws and submission holds from
Judo.
M.M.A.
athletes have to be skilled in all ranges, competing
on their feet or from the floor.
(Pict Below -
--I.K.F. World Kickboxing
Champion
Sayer in Okami Dojo M.M.A. Uniform.)
Sayer,
a former undefeated
World Amateur Kickboxing Champion at Middleweight
and Super-Middleweight and the
2005 Warrington
Sport Personality of the year,
competed twice at the Combat Sports M.M.A.
event, which was held at Hereford sport s centre.
His first contest, against the experienced Ruben
Albert of Wolverhampton, was a
ground war from the opening bell. Both competitors
showed impressive grappling skills and submission
attempts, yet with neither gaining total domination
of the other, the contest went the distance and
both players were awarded a DRAW.
The result of the first contest was huge confidence
boost for Sayer,
who was admittedly suffering a little from ring
rust following his two and a half year break from
competition.
Graham’s
second Mixed-Martial-Arts
match was against Paul
Young of Wiltshire, who’s
chosen tactics were to 'Stand-and-bang'. This
range obviously suited Sayer,
who simply went through the gears, utilising his
kickboxing striking, and winning by T.K.O.
in just under sixty seconds!
Sayer,
undefeated in his first two mixed-martial-arts
contests, now progresses to the 2nd round of the
Combat Sports Open
Trials which will be held on the
8th May.

APR 10th:
--Results
2nd Am. Kickboxing Event of 2010.

On Saturday 10th April 2010, Okami-Dojo
- Warrington Kickboxing
Studio promoted the second Amateur
Kickboxing event of the 2010
'KUMITE CHALLENGE'
SERIES.
This was organised to give Novice Kickboxers valuable
ring-sport experience and for those interested
in becoming a future Champion, valuable preparation
in the build up to the
2010 A.K.A. English
Tournament Championships
which will be held at the end
of the year for the leading contender in each
weight division.
This
was a very busy event, and actually featured 'FIVE'
Grandprix Tournaments.
Three for men, at -75kgs, -85kgs and +85Kgs.
For the ladies the divisions were -70 Kgs and
+ 70 Kgs.
The mens Middleweight ( 75kgs
Max ) tournament was won by
Mark Platts from Newcastle,
who was the first competitor to beat three opponents
during one event, (Grandprix format), when he
defeated Phil Dale
in the Quarter-finals 57
- 16,and
then defeated Ben
Hope in the Quarter-finals via
points decision 91
to 47.

In the Middleweght Tournament Final, Platts
faced Jamie Wood,
who gave a very good account of himself taking
his experienced opponent the full three rounds
distance, with Platts
winning the final 113
points to 83.
During
the mens Cruiserweight ( 85kgs
Max ) tournament, Warrington
Kickboxer, Dave
Corless-Smith, was very impressive
defeating James
Hodgkins by T.K.O. in the Quarter-final
contests.
Mr Corless-Smith
then defeated Karl
Schon on points 72
- 65
in the Semi-finals.
In the finals he beat Chris
Burns from Leigh
by T.K.O. stoppage in the first round.
The mens Heavyweight tournament
was won by John
Emanu when he defeated Martin
Rylands by T.K.O.
Martin
had picked up some battle damage in an earlier
match and was carrying a bruised thigh going into
the final. Emanu
was quick to capitalise on this, landing several
accurate shin-kicks early in the opening round
that secured an early
victory.
---
The ladies Lightweight tournament
saw Warrington Kickboxer, Katie
Hawkins, matched against Hayley
O’Neil of Leigh.
Both ladies had particularly tough semi-contest
bouts that had taken a lot out of them. Their
Ladies Lightweight final was
a real test of spirit as neither girl wanted to
give ground to the other and the scores were level
pegging throughout. After three very close rounds
the Lightweight final was decided
on points, with Hayley
O’Neill just edging the
decision 130
points to 127.

The Middleweight final was
contested between Emma
Elliot from Warrington
and Cath Stroud
of Leigh.
This was an exciting matchup, as both ladies had
mixed in good company in their earlier contests
and it was obvious that a deciding factor was
going to be decided on how much gas both players
had left in their tank.
Stroud showed incredible fitness
that enabled her to win by the 'Outclass'
rule, when her points score extended a lead ofmore
than 30 points.

Grading Success: Two Senior Grades Passed

On Saturday 24th April, Warrington
Kickboxing Studio saw its many
of its members put through their paces as students
tested for their coloured belts from beginner
level, ( yellow belts ) , through to the more
advanced level
( brown belts ).
The exam, which lasted most of the day was headlined
with two of our members, Martin
Rylands ( Pictured top row, second

Paige 'The Diamond'
Farrington Wins Again!!!

Warrington Kickboxer, Paige
' The Diamond ' Farrington,
won her third professional kickboxing contest
at the weekend. Competing under 'K-1
Kickboxing' rules, which allows
kicks, punches and knees.
Paige
faced Emma Goodwin
of Storm gym, who is currently #6
in the British rankings.
Pict Above : Paige

The bout was held at the Tower Ballroom, in Birmingham
and a sold out audience saw the two ladies in
several explosive exchanges during the match.
The opening round saw Goodwin
looking for an early finish, utilising power punching,
and although under pressure Farrington
kept her cool and looked to control her opponent
at range with a stiff jab.
Pict Above : Paige
lands the
-------------------------
Front Kick to the face.

The second round saw Paige
increase the pace and she started to hurt
Emma with shin-kicks to
the thigh and to the body.
Goodwin
looked to close Paige
down, but each time she managed to break the kicking
range, the Warrington fighter punished her on
the inside with knee-kicks to the ribs.
Round three and the gallant Goodwin
tried to rally once again, but Paige
was simply too fast, too powerful
and too fit, dominating her throughout. At the
start of the fourth round, Paige's
hand was raised as Goodwin
did not rise from her corner. The result was a
round three T.K.O. win for the
lady from the Wolf-Gym
Okami-Dojo!

When Paul is not in the dojo,
many members see him out locally on the beat where
he pursues his second passion, helping the community,
as a special constable

2010 National Championships!
On Saturday 30th
October Warrington Kickboxing
Studio had outstanding results at the 2010
Amateur Kickboxing Championships,
held at Lowton Civic Hall in Leigh.
Despite our members being very active on the
circuit, the last time a championship belt was
actually brought back to Warrington, was over
three years ago, in September 2007!
During the 2010 season our members have worked
incredibly hard throughout, competing regularly
on the
Kumite Challenge
events
to give themselves the very best preperation possible.
Those following the Okami-Dojo
training program were rewarded as the Warrington
Kickboxers simply wiped out their opposition in
the finals to have not one, but six
members crowned Champion in their
respective divisions!
Brown belt members Katie
Hawkins, Phil Dale,
Ben O’Brien
and Paul Duckworth captured the
English Amateur Championships at Lightweight,
Welterweight, Super-Welterweight and Super-Cruiserweight.
Then in the headline bouts, black belts Andy
Harris and John
Emanu, secured the British Super-Welterweight
and British Super-Heavyweight ( Open-Weight )
Amateur titles between them.
Also on this event, Warrington Kickboxers Jamie
Wood and Ste Brotherston
gained Bronze Medals for their bouts in the tournament
elimination rounds.
