The
Art of Striking!
Kickboxing
is known as 'The art of
Striking', and Striking is regarded by
many as the ultimate method of Combat.
Learning how to Strike with Kicks, Punches, Knees,
Elbows, Open-Palms and even Headbutts has made
Kickboxing one of the most popular activities
in the world for people wanting practical Martial-Arts
training for Self-Defence or Combat-Sports training
for Competition.
Combat-Kickboxing, a Martial-Art
system for Self-Defence.
Sport-Kickboxing, a Combat-Sport
for Competition.
At the Wolf Gym, we offer Kickboxing for both
Martial Arts training
( Self-Defence ) and for Combat-Sport
training ( Competition ).

THE HISTORY AND DEVELOPMENT OF KICKBOXING:
The
origins of Kickboxing are rooted in the traditional
Martial Art systems of Thailand. There are several
styles and these are collectively known as Muay-Boran,
( translation 'Fighting
- Traditional' ).
At the turn of the 20th Century, in the 1920's,
Muay-Boran underwent modernisation to develop
a more modern combat-sport. Certain rules and
regulations were adopted from Western Boxing,
such as the use of the Roped-Ring, Boxing Gloves
and Weight categories.
This lead to Thailand creating the very first
Sport to use Kicking and Boxing
( Kickboxing ) in a ring! The name of this new
Combat-Sport became known as Muay-Thai, ( Thai-Kickboxing
).
In the 1960's, Muay-Thai was very popular with
fights being held weekly. One promoter seeking
to take advantage of this popularity organised
an event between fighters from Thailand, &
Japan ( Muay-Thai vs Karate ).
Kenji Kurosaki a Kyokushin style Karate Master
attended this event with a Japanese team to compete
against the Thai's. Kurosaki was very impressed
with Muay-Thai as a fighting system, and after
the event he stayed in Thailand to expand on his
Karate skills with Muay-Thai.
Kenji
Kurosaki, ( pictured ) then developed
his own style of Kickboxing, combining techniques
of Muay-Thai
and Kyokushin-Karate.
He then opened the first Japanese Kickboxing
Dojo called Mejiro Gym.
Many Dutch Karate fighters, trained in Japan
during the late 1970's and it was at the Mejiro
Gym that some were introduced to Japanese
Kickboxing.
One
of Kurosaki's
Dutch students, Jan
Plas, then opened the first Kickboxing
gym in Holland under the Mejiro
Gym name.
Dutch-Kickboxing was now born!

SPORT-KICKBOXING
:
As
a Contact-Combat-Sport, there are various Sport-Kickboxing
formats ( rule sets ) used around the World.
For example Thai-Kickboxing
( Muay-Thai ), Japanese
- Kickboxing ( K-1
Rules ), and Dutch-Kickboxing
( GLORY Rules ).
Today KICKBOXING is
often referred to simply as 'STRIKING'.
A simply way to explain, is to use the following
example about the sport of Rugby.
A popular book, used by some as an Instructor manual.
Note the title :
MUAYTHAI
:
ADVANCED THAI-KICKBOXING TECHNIQUES
a book by Christopher
Delph.
Covering all the aspects of Kickboxing
when competing under Muay-Thai rules. |

Title ( 05/10/2019 ) when he knocked out the defending
Champion Robert Whittaker.

Cage-Kickboxing,
is a style of Kickboxing that is modified for
Strikers competing under Mixed-Martial-Arts rules,
such as the rules used by the
UFC ( Ultimate Fighting
Championship ),
and is often referred to as either
'Striking-for-MMA'
or 'MMA-Striking'.
As
well as Striking techniques while standing, as
seen in a 'K-1' or
'Muaythai' bout Cage-Kickboxing
also includes 'Split-Level-Striking'
and 'Ground-Striking'.
'Split-Level-Striking'
is when one person is at Standing level and their
opponent is at Grounded level.
'Ground-Striking'
is when both persons are on the floor, and is
often referred to as 'Ground-&-Pound'.
Along
with defending against Kicks and Boxing the additional
skills of 'Takedown-Defence'
are implemented to counter an opponent that may
try to take you to the floor.

______________________________________________________________________
Note :
Split-Level-Striking, Ground-Striking and Takedown-Defence
is not taught at most Kickboxing gyms as the majority
of clubs only focus on the 'Sport-Kickboxing'
and their preferred ruleset,
( K-1
or Muay-Thai ).
However, the Wolf-Gym's Kickboxing syllabus also
covers Cage-Kickboxing ( MMA-Striking
) and Combat-Kickboxing ( Self-Defence
).
For these reasons, Warrington Kickboxing is the
#1 Martial Arts Academy in Cheshire.

COMBAT-KICKBOXING / 'STRIKING FOR SELF-DEFENCE
'
The techniques of 'Split-Level-Striking',
'Ground-Striking'
and 'Takedown-Defence'
can also be applied as Self-Defence
skills.
When training Striking skills specificallty for
Self-Defence applications, this is known as 'Combat-Kickboxing'.
Self-Defence
training,
should always cover both the Combat ranges of
Standing and when Grounded, as you never know
how a Self-Defence situation may turn out.

Note :
The most important fight
anyone could win, is not one that rewards you
with a medal or a trophy, but one that either
changes your life or even saves your life!
Any
club that does not cover 'Split-Level-Striking'
, 'Ground-Striking'
and 'Takedown-Defence'
should not advertise that they teach Self-Defence.
Approximately 95% of our members train for Self-Defence
( Combat-Kickboxing
) with about 5% training for Competion ( Sport-Kickboxing
). There is no pressure on anyone to compete.
