THE HISTORY AND DEVELOPMENT OF KICKBOXING:
origins of Kickboxing are rooted in the traditional
Martial Art systems of Thailand. There are several
styles and these are collective known as Muay-Boran,
( translation 'Fighting - Traditional ).
At the turn of the 20th Century, in the 1920's,
Muay-Boran underwent modernisation to develope
a more modern combat-sport. The saw rules and
regulations of Western Boxing being adopted, such
as the use of the Ring, Boxing Gloves and weight
This lead to Thailand having the very first Sport
to use Kicking and Boxing
( Kickboxing ) in a ring! The name of this format
became known as Muay-Thai,
( Thai-Kickboxing ).
In the 1960's, Thai-Kickboxing was a very popular
Combat-sport. On a particular event there was
a challenge organised between the fighting styles
of Thailand, & Japan ( Muay-Thai vs Karate
this event a Japanese Master, Kenji
Kurosaki, ( pictured ) developed his
own style of Kickboxing, combining the best
elements of Muay-Thai
He then opened the first Japanese Kickboxing
Dojo called Mejiro Gym.
Many Dutch Karate fighters, trained in Japan
during the late 1970's and it was at the Mejiro
Gym that some were introduced to Japanese
Dutch students, Jan
Plas, then opened the first Kickboxing
gym in Holland under the Mejiro name.
Dutch-Kickboxing was now born.
