Brief Seminar Report by Neil Holden
On Saturday 15th October 2022, my teacher, Bram-Arjarn
Sken, delivered his annual seminar at the Wolf-Gym.
This
years seminar was quite special for me, as it
coincided with the 30 year anniversary of being
awarded my Instructor grade by Grand-Master Sken,
( 10th October 1992
). A turning point in my life, that enabled me
to have a
full-time career as a Martial Arts Instructor.
On
the morning of the seminar I had a private training
session with Grand-Master Sken. It was such a
great feeling to be the Student again, working
as hard as possible to impress the teacher. Concentrating
on executing every technique as perfectly as possible.
During the warm up we used the Octagon, practising
Cage-Muay-Thai techniques and utilising lots of
Clinch-Knee & Elbows while against the fence.
Later we moved from the Personal-Training Studio,
into the Group-Class Studio, so that we could
utilise the Multi-Level Bag rig. The different
shapes of the various bags, allowing different
techniques to be applied more realistically than
using single Kickbag.
To finish off the session, as a cool down, I used
the Dummy-bag, demonstrating not only Submissions
skills, but Muay-Boran style grounded striking
from various positions, such as Side-control,
Knee-on-belly, Full-mount, Rear-mount and Bottom
guard as well as Kick-offs and technical Stand-up.
Following the training, we had a break before
the students arrived for the seminar. We used
this time to discuss how the sport has developed
over the years, and also in more recent times,
especially with the popularity of
Cage-Muay-Thai, due to ONE Championship's global
audience.
We also discussed how today's modern MMA-Striking,
which utilises strikes while grounded as well
as standing, is very much the same as traditional
battlefield Muay-Boran.
The seminar for the Wolf-Gym members started at
11.30am, and lasted 90 minutes. Grand-Master Sken
assessing the Shadow-Boxing skills of everyone
during the warm up.
Then the seminar moved onto striking skills using
the Thai-pads and some incredible combinations.
Grand-Master Sken impressing everyone with his
speed, movement and striking skills. His High-Kicks
and Spinning-Kicks, leaving the students in awe.
Grand-Master Sken moves like a person 50 years
younger than his age. Very inspirational!
At
the end of the seminar Bram-Arjarn Sken took time
to give Craig Booth an award, in recognition of
him completing more than 25 years as an Instructor.
A very kind gesture, welcomed by everyone.
The
whole day was a great success, and every member
thoroughly enjoyed the experience.
We
look forward to the next seminar in the near future.
Thank
you Grand-Master Sken, my teacher, my mentor and
my inspiration.

seminar ends, with a bow.
We bow to say Thank you to the teacher's, not just
the teacher of the class, but to all of the teacher's
throughout history, as without them, there would
be no martial arts today.
