Brief Seminar Report by
Neil Holden
On Saturday 28th October 2023, my teacher, who
was recently promoted to the Instructor rank of
'Senior Grand-Master',
delivered his third annual seminar at the Wolf-Gym.
October
is the month that the Wolf-Gym always hosts it's
annual seminar, as October was the month that
I was awarded my Instructor grade by Senior Grand-Master
Sken and the seminar date is a tribute, ( thank
you ), for the promotion. This year being the
31st year since my
Instructor grade promotion ( 10th
October 1992 ).
On
the morning of the seminar I had a private training
session with Senior Grand-Master Sken. During
the warm up time that was spent on stretching,
we spoke about how Muay-Thai in the U.K. had developed
over the last 3 decades, and especially about
the recent changes brought about by ONE
Championship and the incredibly popular
format of 'Global Rules'
Muay-Thai.
Being open to change, is often the key to success,
and Senior Grand-Master Sken spoke about how techniques
and training methods, systems and styles need
to evolve over time. We also spoke about the Combat-Sports
of Mixed-Martial-Arts
and how many M.M.A. fighters choose to mix Muay-Thai
( Striking ) with
Ju-Jitsu ( Submissions
) for their combat style.
After stretching, it was time to put on the 4oz
MMA gloves and get to work in the white ring.
The training session seemed to pass very quickly.
Skipping, Shadow-Boxing, Plyometric exercises,
Bagwork techiques, Stamina-drills on the bags,
then finishing with a cool-down round utilising
the Strikes-&-Submission grappling dummy,
( mixing Muay-Thai and Ju-Jitsu techniques whilst
grounded ).
Muay-Thai is a young mans Sport. Most Instructors
stop training in their 30's. Being 51 years old,
and still aimimg to train like a 21 year old,
is no easy achievement, especially with the many
injuries that middle age brings to the game. I
did my best, under the watchful eye of my teacher,
and was grateful that there were not to many corrections
to work on.
Following the training, we had a short break before
the students arrived for the seminar. I took this
opportunity to present Senior Grand-Master Sken
with a personal gift, that he could use while
teaching. A pair of stunning White & Gold
VENUM Boxing Gloves, made in Thailand.
A long standing tradition that we have continued
to observe at the Wolf-Gym, is that only Master
Sken ( now Senior-Grand-Master Sken ), can use
White Gloves. Another tradition is that only a
'Grand-Master' uses the colour Gold. So, for Senior-Grand-Master
Sken, the White & Gold gloves, I felt were
the ideal gift.
The seminar for the Wolf-Gym members started at
11.30am, and lasted 90 minutes. Grand-Master Sken
lead a warm up that included very intricate drills
with lots of position changing and head movements.
Then the seminar moved onto striking skills using
the Thai-pads and some incredible combinations.
Senior-Grand-Master Sken impressing everyone with
his speed, agility and striking skills. His High-Kicks,
leaving the students in awe. Senior-Grand-Master
Sken, who is 68, moves like an 18 year old. One
has to witness this with their own eyes to appreciate
it!
At
the end of the seminar I presented Bram-Arjarn-Yai
Sken, on behalf of the Wolf-Gym members in attendance,
an engraved trophy, thanking him for the 2023
seminar.
The
event was a great success, as were the 2022 and
the 2021 seminars, and an experience that members
will remember.
Thank
you Senior Grand-Master Sken, my teacher, my mentor
and my inspiration.
